Elizabeth Frazer is Official Fellow and Tutor in Politics, New College, Oxford, and University Lecturer in Politics, Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Oxford. She is the author of The Problems of Communitarian Politics (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1999), and numerous articles on the subjects of citizenship and education, and ideals of political relationships. She is currently engaged in research projects on justifications of violence in political thought, and on citizens’ resources for political conflict. Michael Freeden is Professor of Politics and founding Director of the Centre for Political Ideologies at the Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Oxford, and Professorial Fellow at Mansfield College, Oxford. Among his books are The New Liberalism: An Ideology of Social Reform (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1978); Ideologies and Political Theory: A Conceptual Approach (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1996); and Liberal Languages: Ideological Imaginations and 20th Century Progressive Thought (Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 2005). He is editor of the Journal of Political Ideologies and is currently completing a book on the political theory of political thinking, as well as developing approaches to the comparative study of political thought. Sudhir Hazareesingh is CUF Lecturer in International Relations in the Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Oxford; Fellow in Politics at Balliol College, Oxford; and Fellow of the British Academy. Among his books are Political Traditions in Modern France (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1994); From Subject to Citizen (Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1998); Intellectual Founders of the Republic (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2001); and The Legend of Napoleon (London: Granta, 2004). He has also written extensively on various aspects of French political and cultural history. He is currently working on a book on the Gaullist myth in contemporary France. Iwao Hirose is Assistant Professor in Ethics in the Philosophy Department and the McGill School of Environment, McGill University, and Research Fellow in the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics, University of Melbourne. When he drafted his contribution to this book, he was the Donnelly Junior Research Fellow in Ethics at University College, Oxford. His recent publications include ‘Aggregation and Numbers’, Utilitas, 16 (2004), pp. 62–79; and ‘Weighted Lotteries in Life and Death Cases’, Ratio, 21 (2007), pp. 45–56. He is currently working on a book entitled Moral Aggregation.
